Jan Brons Captures 2nd Prize

June 1, 2009

Jan Brons Captures 2nd Prize in the USEF National Intermediaire I Championships with a score of 74.526% !!!

At the USEF Dressage Festival of Champions, where he came in second place at I 1, with only a fraction of a percent difference from first – Jan Brons held his own in a gifted field of riders that included: Shannon Peters, Courtney King-Dye, Shelly Francis, Arlene (Tuny) Page, Chris Hickey, Pamela Goodrich and Kathleen Raine. Katherine Bateson-Chandler won the class with a 74.579 %, barely beating Jan’s score of 74.526% Now Jan is off to Europe for training, courtesy of winning the Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize from the Dressage Foundation. He will be returning to the U.S. to give clinics, and is scheduled to hold his first summer clinic at the Chesapeake Dressage Institute on July 25th and 26th. He will be returning from Europe for several more clinics, and we feel honored that he has chosen CDI as one of the three spots in the U.S. where he will train. Check our calendar for the rest of his summer schedule.

FEI rider and trainer Jan Brons is the winner of the first Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize from The Dressage Foundation. Jan began giving clinics at the Chesapeake Dressage Institute last year and will be going back and forth from his training in Europe to offer several more clinics this summer.

According to the Dressage Foundation, this $25,000 prize “is to provide financial assistance for coaching and training to a talented, committed, qualified rider whose plan is to reach and excel at the elite, international standards of high performance dressage.”

President and CEO of the Dressage Foundation Lendon Gray remarked that “a strong field of applicants applied for this important new prize, and the Selection Committee, comprised of distinguished dressage leaders had their work cut out for them.”

Jan is very respected in the dressage world, both by his clients and his peers and we feel very honored that we are one of the three sites in the US he has chosen to give clinics. For further information on Jan (pronounced “Yon”) take a look at his website.

Wellington Classic Dressage Professional Rider’s Clinic

CDI’s Onsite Trainer Lisa Gruen of LG Dressage

Lisa Gruen, onsite trainer at CDI, traveled from the cold of January to the unexpected chill of Florida to attend the Wellington Classic Dressage Professional Rider’s Clinic and Symposium held January 16-17th. The program started at 4:00pm and lasted to around 11:00pm each day. Decorated tables were set up under the covered arena at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center and circled the dressage ring. Spectators ate dinner and watched, while snuggled under jackets, hats and blankets, in the unseasonable chill. Enthusiasm was high as the program mainly focused on Hubertus Schmidt as he lectured while coaching riders Charlotte Bredhal, Jan Brons, Steffen Peters and others.

Bo Jena did demonstrations each night on long-lining and there were several sponsors and speakers but the main event was watching the improvement of each rider under the skillful teaching of Hubertus Schmidt.

Lisa said she really enjoyed watching Hubertus offer his input on Steffen’s ride. She liked the instant rider feedback and impressions from the ground as these two very talented and knowledgeable trainers worked together. There was a lot to see with horses ranging from 5 years old to GP and to see how these top trainers train the ones, the piaffe and passage and which to do first. “It is always interesting to hear how the top trainers use the training scale and hear their experiences and philosophies” she said.

Hopefully we will all benefit from the “trickle down” effect of Lisa’s observations and practiced eye as she watched the best of the best get instructions, too.

The next day she was able to watch several riders, including Betsy Steiner, in a small private clinic with Steffen Peters and observe even more closely the work of a master. We are working on getting Steffen back to MD again for another clinic so keep your fingers crossed.

CDI’s Dax chosen as Anky’s mount for victory gallop!!!

While Steffen Peters of the US won the Grand Prix in the inaugural Equis World Dressage Masters competition in Wellington, FL in January, Holland’s Anky van Grunsven won the Musical Free Style.

Anky always requests a local, quiet horse for her Victory Gallop, and CDI’s Founder and President Janet Richardson-Pearson’s horse Dax was selected! Dax is a 22 year old Schoolmaster, who has to live in Florida year round, due to his allergies. When he was taken to the showgrounds, he was quite excited and puffed up, for about ½ hour, before he realized he was now OLD. He was wonderful as Anky’s ride, and is shown with her holding her trophy. Since the following week was his birthday, there was a party and cake at the barn, and he is photographed wearing a crown. What a guy!
