Chesapeake Dressage Institute Health Record Requirements

New Policy for Strangles Vaccination – 1/08

Due to the latest research, we will no longer be requiring horses to be immunized against Strangles.  Unvaccinated horses will be stabled separately, and will have use of the outdoor wash stall.  Please check your horse’s temperature before you arrive at our facility, and don’t come if your horse has a temperature, and/or runny nose.

All horses entering the Chesapeake Dressage Institute's property for clinics/training should be immunized for Equine EHV - 1 (either modified live or killed vaccine) no later than 90 days prior to arrival on the property.

Health records and required vaccines for trailer-in lessons, arena rentals and clinics:

    • Negative Coggins
    • Eastern and Western Encephalitis
    • Influenza
    • Potomac Horse Fever
    • Rabies
    • Strangles (recommended) *SEE NEW POLICY ABOVE
    • Tetanus
    • West Nile
    • Herpes-related ( EHV-1) vaccine - Rhinomune brand (the only modified-live vaccine)* Rhinomune is the actual brand name and we specifically require that vaccine.

      Rhinomune
protects against the respiratory form of EHV-1 and may offer some protection against the neurologic form of EHV-1 (herpes). The Rhinomune vaccine should be given within 6 months

of your visit to CDI, but not within the 7 days prior. It can actually be given up to four times per year.

    • CDI also requests that your horse's temperature be taken the night before and the day of your visit. Please know your horse's normal temperature. Elevated temperatures are one of the very first symptoms of potential Herpes.

For shows only :

  • Proof of Rhinomune vaccination (modified- live). Rhinomune is the actual brand name and we specifically require that vaccine. This particular vaccine should be given within 6 months of the competition.

  • Proof of Strangles vaccination (if available/recommended only)

  • Negative Coggins

_________________________________________________

*Cornell University data suggest that horses vaccinated with Rhinomune will have significantly lower nasal shedding of EHV-1 virus after being infected with EHV-1 than horses vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine.

Modified-live vaccines generate two types of immunity - humoral (just antibody) and cell-mediated (lymphocytes). Killed vaccines generate antibody only, which might not offer enough protection when a horse is faced with a strong challenge.

Modified-live vaccines tend to create a stronger reaction in the vaccinated  animal, so some individuals might have a greater risk of vaccine reactions (NOT DISEASE) when modified-live vaccines are used.
